The Ketu mahadasha

In Vimshottari, the vedic system of planetary periods, a life of 120 years is parcelled out among nine lords in a fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Every chart runs through all nine, always in that order, though not everyone starts at Ketu. Which lord you are born into, and how much of that opening period is already spent before birth, is fixed by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at the exact moment of birth - not the sun sign, not the year, not the Chinese animal, none of it. A mahadasha is a stretch of years with a particular colouring, not a scheduled event. It does not promise anything will happen in it; it says what kind of pressure and interest tends to show up while it runs.

What this lord asks for

Ketu is the lunar node without a body - astronomically a point, not a planet, marking where the Moon's path crosses the ecliptic going south. Three nakshatras belong to it: Ashwini, Magha and Mula. If your Moon sits in one of those three at birth, your life opens with a Ketu mahadasha. If not, you meet Ketu later, in its turn in the fixed sequence.

What a Ketu period asks for is subtraction rather than addition. Think of clearing a workbench between two jobs: you are not building the next thing yet, you are putting away tools you no longer need for what's coming. People in a Ketu mahadasha often report losing interest in things that used to hold them - a role, a habit, sometimes a belief they had not examined in years. That is not a curse and it is not depression by default; it is closer to an audit. Some of what gets set aside was genuinely load-bearing, and its absence is felt. Some of it was clutter nobody had gotten around to clearing. A reading cannot tell you in advance which is which for your own life - it can only tell you that this seven-year period, wherever it falls in your chart, tends to run that way.

Where the lord sits matters more than the lord

The mahadasha name tells you the theme. The chart tells you where that theme lands, and that second part changes the reading more than most people expect. Ketu's house and sign placement, its degree, whether it is retrograde, all of that shifts what "clearing the bench" means in practice - work, health, relationships, money, depending on which house it occupies and what sits with it.

A Ketu ruling a house of partnership reads differently from a Ketu ruling a house of communication. Neither is worse; they are different rooms being cleared. This is why two people can be in a Ketu mahadasha in the same calendar years and describe entirely different experiences. The lord is constant across every chart. The house is not, and the house is doing most of the work.

A worked example

Take a chart calculated for Kuala Lumpur, 21 August 1957, 19:26 local time, UTC+8, sidereal positions on the Lahiri ayanamsha, lagna in Aquarius. The Moon at that moment sat in Ardra, pada 1 - not one of the three nakshatras Ketu rules, so this person's life did not open under Ketu. It opened under Rahu, running from 1957-08-21 to 1971-12-04, age 0.0 to 14.3. The nine lords still followed their fixed order from there: Jupiter next, 1971-12-04 to 1987-12-04, age 14.3 to 30.3; then Saturn, 1987-12-04 to 2006-12-04, age 30.3 to 49.3; then Mercury, 2006-12-04 to 2023-12-04, age 49.3 to 66.3.

Ketu's own turn arrives fifth in this particular chart: 2023-12-04 to 2030-12-04, seven years exactly, age 66.3 to 73.3. That length is fixed - a Ketu mahadasha always runs seven years, in every chart, regardless of where in the sequence it falls. At present the person in this example is 69.1 years old, which puts them inside the period with 4.2 years still to run before it hands over to Venus on 2030-12-04, opening a twenty-year Venus mahadasha.

In this chart Ketu itself sits in Aries, at 20°37', in the third house, and it is retrograde. The third house is read for courage, siblings, short trips and the hands - so the clearing this period asks for tends to touch that ground rather than, say, career standing or the home. Retrograde motion here does not reverse the meaning of the placement; it tends to intensify how long-standing the matter being cleared is, something worked over rather than freshly arrived.

The smaller periods inside it

Each seven-year mahadasha is itself divided into nine smaller stretches, called antardashas, run by the same nine lords in the same fixed order, starting with the mahadasha's own lord. Inside this Ketu mahadasha the sequence runs: Ketu, 2023-12-04 to 2024-05-02; Venus, 2024-05-02 to 2025-07-02; Sun, 2025-07-02 to 2025-11-07; Moon, 2025-11-07 to 2026-06-08; Mars, 2026-06-08 to 2026-11-04; Rahu, 2026-11-04 to 2027-11-22; Jupiter, 2027-11-22 to 2028-10-28; Saturn, 2028-10-28 to 2029-12-07; and Mercury, 2029-12-07 to 2030-12-04, which closes the mahadasha out.

At the person's current age of 69.1, the running antardasha is Mars, 2026-06-08 to 2026-11-04, age 68.8 to 69.2 - a short, five-month stretch, a fraction of the seven-year Ketu period it sits inside. This is the level where the clearing theme gets a second colouring: Ketu's overall subtraction, filtered for a few months through whatever Mars brings up in this particular chart. The antardasha changes every few months to a year or so; the mahadasha above it holds for the full seven years.

How to check your own dates

None of these dates can be guessed from a birth date alone, and none of them should be read off a generic table for "people born in 1957." The Moon moves roughly thirteen degrees a day, crossing from one nakshatra into the next in about a day and a quarter, so an unrecorded or approximate birth time can shift the entire sequence - not just by a few days, but potentially by which lord opens the chart at all. If your birth time is uncertain, that is worth resolving before trusting any dasha date, not something to be worked around by intuition or by matching your personality to a lord's reputation.

To get your own mahadasha and antardasha dates, put your birth date, time and place into a Vimshottari calculator that uses the Lahiri ayanamsha and your actual time zone at birth - spacemirror.ru/en/dasha.html is one that returns both the running mahadasha and its sub-periods with dates attached, so you can check the arithmetic yourself rather than take a reading's word for it.
