Nadi koota: the eight points that carry the most weight
Nadi koota is the heaviest single line on the Guna Milan sheet. It is worth 8 points out of 36, about 22% of the whole total, and no other koota outweighs it. When a match comes back with a low total, this is the first line an experienced reader checks, because a zero here removes more points than any other single failure.
What it actually measures
The classical claim is constitution in the ayurvedic sense, read in practice as health and children. Every birth star is assigned one of three nadis: Adi, Madhya or Antya. Think of the nadi as the blood-group line on a laboratory report. You never feel it. It does nothing in daily life. But when two people's reports are compared before they plan a family, that is the line the doctor looks at first. The old texts treat the nadi the same way: a quiet marker of constitution that matters mainly when two constitutions are joined.
How it is scored
The 27 nakshatras are dealt into the three nadis in a fixed order, nine stars each, the way cards are dealt into three hands. Once you know which hand a star sits in, the rule is mechanical. If your star and your partner's star fall in the same nadi, Nadi koota scores 0 out of 8. If they fall in different nadis, it scores 8 out of 8. There is no partial credit, no three or four points. It is the only koota that is all or nothing, and a same-nadi pair is what the books call Nadi dosha.
A pair where it fails
A pair calculated for these dates: she was born on 13 January 1992 at 14:59 in Penang, he on 9 August 1986 at 07:23 in Penang. Her Moon sits in Aries at 0.80 degrees, in Ashwini, the 1st nakshatra, pada 1. His Moon sits in Virgo at 0.46 degrees, in Uttara Phalguni, the 12th nakshatra, pada 2. Ashwini is dealt into Adi. Uttara Phalguni is also dealt into Adi. Same nadi, so Nadi scores 0 out of 8.
The full sheet ran: Varna 0 out of 1, Vashya 0 out of 2, Tara 1.5 out of 3, Yoni 1 out of 4, Graha Maitri 1 out of 5, Gana 6 out of 6, Bhakoot 0 out of 7, Nadi 0 out of 8. Total: 9.5 out of 36, which the sheet marks low. Notice what happened. Gana gave full marks, all 6 points, and it made no difference, because the two heaviest lines on the sheet, Nadi and Bhakoot, both came back empty. The sheet raises both a nadi dosha and a bhakoot dosha for this pair.
A pair where it holds
A second pair, also calculated for real dates: she was born on 11 November 1995 at 22:29 in Singapore, he on 20 November 1994 at 14:58 in Penang. Her Moon is in Gemini at 12.40 degrees, in Ardra, the 6th nakshatra, pada 2. His Moon is in Taurus at 25.58 degrees, in Mrigashira, the 5th nakshatra, pada 1. Ardra falls in Adi; Mrigashira falls in Madhya. Different nadis, so Nadi scores the full 8 out of 8.
Their sheet: Varna 0 out of 1, Vashya 1 out of 2, Tara 3 out of 3, Yoni 2 out of 4, Graha Maitri 5 out of 5, Gana 5 out of 6, Bhakoot 0 out of 7, Nadi 8 out of 8. Total: 24 out of 36, marked moderate. Look at it closely. Even with Nadi paying out in full, Bhakoot gave nothing and a bhakoot dosha still stands on the sheet. Full marks on the heaviest line did not buy this couple a clean bill. That is how the eight lines work: each one pays or fails on its own rule, and no line covers for another.
What a zero here does and does not mean
A zero in Nadi means exactly one thing: the two Moons were in stars dealt into the same nadi. From that alone, nothing else follows. It does not follow that the marriage will fail, that children cannot come, that anyone will fall sick, or that your family should treat the proposal as finished, and I say this in the same breath as the zero because the zero is where too many readings stop. The three-nadi dealing also tells you the scale: with 27 stars sorted into three groups, roughly one pair in three drawn at random will share a nadi. If a same-nadi pairing were a verdict on its own, a third of all proposals would be barred outright, and no working astrologer actually reads it that way. If the worry underneath is genuinely about health or children, a clinic in Penang or Singapore will answer that far better than any koota can.
Where astrologers disagree
The disputes here are real, and you should know them before anyone reads your sheet at you. Many schools hold that Nadi dosha is cancelled when both partners share the same nakshatra but fall in different padas, or when certain Moon-sign conditions are met; some cancel it when Bhakoot scores full, others when Graha Maitri is strong. The strict tables, including the Saravali/Maitreya set used for the two pairs above, simply record the zero and leave the cancellation to the reader's judgement. In my experience the honest way is to report the zero first, then check openly whether a recognised cancellation applies, and say out loud which school I am following, so your family can see that the score and the argument about the score are two separate things.
Two more cautions, and these are not disputed. Nadi is one koota of eight, and Guna Milan itself is only one layer of matching: Mangal dosha, the condition of the 7th house and the dasha periods of both people sit outside the 36 points entirely. And the whole eight-koota method rests on the Moon alone. Two people can post a high total and still be unsuited on everything the Moon does not cover, which is most of married life. Finally, check the birth time before anything else. A time wrong by two hours can move the Moon into the next nakshatra; the woman in the first pair has her Moon at 0.80 degrees of Aries, so a couple of hours either way and her star, her nadi and the zero itself could all be different. A score built on a guessed time is a guessed score.
Running your own
You can run the same tables at https://spacemirror.ru/en/match.html — the form takes two sets of birth details and returns all eight kootas, the total out of 36 and any doshas the pair raises. Confirm both birth times against a birth certificate or hospital record before you enter them. Then read the Nadi line where it belongs: as the heaviest single item on the sheet, not as the sheet.
All eight kootas with their points, the total out of 36 and any doshas — from both Moons at their real sidereal longitude, on the time zone in force on each birth date. No sign-up.
