The second chart: what a Scorpio navamsa ascendant actually shows

You ran your chart online and got two wheels instead of one. The first is labelled rasi or D1, the second navamsa or D9. The second one looks scrambled: planets in different signs, a different ascendant, nothing where you left it. This article explains why that scrambling is arithmetic, not error, and then reads one specific configuration: a navamsa ascendant in Scorpio.

How the ninth division is calculated

A sign is 30 degrees wide. The navamsa division cuts each sign into 9 equal parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. Nine parts per sign, twelve signs, so 108 navamsas around the zodiac. Those numbers are fixed; nothing about them is interpretive.

What makes the D9 chart look alien is the counting rule. Where each ninth lands depends on the movability of the sign it came from. A movable sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) counts its ninths starting from itself. A fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) counts from the ninth sign onward. A dual sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) counts from the fifth. This is the rule of Parashara, and it is why a planet at 14 degrees of Cancer in the rasi chart can end up in Sagittarius in the navamsa. Every chart here is calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa on the sidereal zodiac, so the degrees will not match a Western tropical printout.

The worked example

The example chart belongs to an anonymous person born 23 November 2005 at 23:41 in Kuala Lumpur, time zone UTC+8. The ayanamsa at that moment was 23.9384 degrees. The rasi ascendant is Cancer at 14.32 degrees. That degree falls in the fifth navamsa of Cancer, and because Cancer is a movable sign counting from itself, the fifth ninth lands in Scorpio. So the navamsa ascendant is Scorpio at 8.88 degrees, navamsa part 5 of the rasi sign, and the lord of the navamsa ascendant is Mars.

Note what did not happen: the ascendant is not vargottama. Vargottama means a planet or point repeats its rasi sign in the navamsa, and Cancer does not equal Scorpio. In fact this chart has no vargottama planets at all. No planet in it repeats its rasi sign in the navamsa. That is unremarkable; it simply means every planet works from a different sign in the two charts, which is the common case.

Where the planets actually sit

Here is the full picture, both charts, because reading a D9 without the D1 beside it is how misreadings start. The Sun moves from Scorpio in the rasi to Virgo in the navamsa, at 7.60 degrees, in the eleventh house of the navamsa, with Mercury as navamsa lord. The Moon moves from Leo to Taurus, at 11.21 degrees, in the seventh house, navamsa lord Venus. Mars moves from Aries to Leo, at 25.44 degrees, in the tenth house, navamsa lord Sun. Mercury moves from Scorpio to Virgo, at 29.01 degrees, also in the eleventh house, navamsa lord Mercury. Jupiter moves from Libra to Capricorn, at 19.52 degrees, in the third house, navamsa lord Saturn. Venus moves from Sagittarius to Libra, at 24.88 degrees, in the twelfth house, navamsa lord Venus. Saturn moves from Cancer to Sagittarius, at 6.34 degrees, in the second house, navamsa lord Jupiter. Rahu moves from Pisces to Sagittarius, at 15.85 degrees, in the second house alongside Saturn, navamsa lord Jupiter. Ketu moves from Virgo to Gemini, at 15.85 degrees, in the eighth house, navamsa lord Mercury.

The navamsa houses fill in accordingly. The second house, Sagittarius, holds both Saturn and Rahu. The third, Capricorn, holds Jupiter. The seventh, Taurus, holds the Moon. The eighth, Gemini, holds Ketu. The tenth, Leo, holds Mars. The eleventh, Virgo, holds the Sun and Mercury together. The twelfth, Libra, holds Venus. Houses one, four, five, six and nine are empty, which is normal — empty houses are read through their lords, not treated as missing.

What the Scorpio navamsa lagna describes

Scorpio goes all in and keeps some of it private. As a navamsa ascendant this describes the inner texture of the chart rather than the public face. The rasi ascendant, Cancer, is what the world meets; the navamsa ascendant is the stance the person settles into underneath, especially as life matures. With Scorpio there, the underlying manner is one of full commitment paired with reserve: whatever this person takes seriously is taken seriously completely, and a portion of it stays off the record.

The lord of this ascendant is Mars, and Mars sits in Leo in the tenth house of the navamsa at 25.44 degrees. The ascendant lord in the tenth gives the private intensity a public channel: effort concentrates on work and visible duty rather than dispersing. This is a description of texture, not a promise of career outcomes.

The seventh house and the Moon

The seventh house of any navamsa gets attention because the D9 is traditionally consulted on marriage and close partnership. Here the seventh is Taurus, lord Venus, and it holds the Moon at 11.21 degrees. A benefic, stable sign on the seventh with the Moon sitting in it describes a partnership sphere that is emotional, steady and comfort-seeking in character. Venus, the seventh lord, sits in its own sign Libra in the twelfth house at 24.88 degrees. Read plainly: the lord of the partnership house occupies a house of privacy and withdrawal. That combination says something about how this chart experiences closeness — deeply, and partly behind closed doors — which sits coherently with a Scorpio lagna. It does not say whom this person will marry, when, or whether it will go well.

How common this is, and how to check your own

One reader in twelve has a Scorpio navamsa ascendant, since any of the twelve signs can rise in the D9 with roughly equal frequency. If your own printout shows D9 lagna in Scorpio, the mechanics above are your mechanics: find Mars in your navamsa, see which house holds your Moon and your seventh lord, and read the two charts side by side rather than separately.
