Yoni koota: four points on the animal table

Of the 36 points in Guna Milan, Yoni koota controls exactly 4 — about 11% of the sheet. By weight it sits fifth among the eight kootas; Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi all outweigh it. Its classical brief is physical temperament: how easily two people settle into each other's body clock — sleep, appetite, touch, the ordinary bodily machinery of living in one house.

What it actually measures

Each of the 27 nakshatras is assigned one of fourteen animals. Horse, buffalo, tiger, lion, deer, dog, cat, rat, cow, mongoose, snake, monkey, sheep, elephant. Your Moon's nakshatra fixes your animal; your partner's Moon fixes theirs. The classical claim, in plain words: the animal pairing is a shorthand for how two bodies behave around each other, not how two minds agree and not how two families get on. Read it like the back-of-pack chart on a rice sack — row for one grain, column for the other, cell tells you the cooking time. Nothing mystical in the mechanics. Two stars in, one number out.

How it is scored

The rule is a fixed lookup from the Saravali/Maitreya koota tables. Same animal on both sides: 4 points. Friendly animals: 3. Indifferent pairing: 2. Cool pairing: 1. Two animals the table lists as natural enemies: 0. There is no partial credit for effort and no way to argue a cell into a higher number.

How rare is the zero? The enemy pairs are a small cluster of cells in the fourteen-by-fourteen grid. In my experience a true yoni zero turns up in roughly one proposal in fifteen or twenty — far less often than a Varna zero, which fires constantly and costs only one point. So if your sheet shows a low number here, you are not in a strange minority singled out by the stars; you are in a known corner of a printed table.

A pair where it fails

A pair calculated for these dates: her birth 18 March 1996 at 17:02, Johor Bahru — Moon at 20.11 degrees Aquarius, in Purva Bhadrapada, the 25th nakshatra, pada 1. His birth 26 December 1986 at 01:25, Ipoh — Moon at 26.26 degrees Virgo, in Chitra, the 14th nakshatra, pada 1. The table reads her side as lion and his side as tiger. Lion against tiger scores 1 point out of 4.

Now look at where the sheet as a whole landed. Varna 0 of 1. Vashya 2 of 2. Tara 1.5 of 3. Yoni 1 of 4. Graha Maitri 4 of 5. Gana 0 of 6. Bhakoot 0 of 7. Nadi 8 of 8. Total: 16.5 out of 36 — a low sheet, and one that also raises bhakoot and gana dosha flags. Notice what did the damage. The zeros in Gana and Bhakoot cost thirteen points between them. The yoni line cost three. If a family astrologer slides this sheet across the table and says "only 16.5", the animal row is the smallest problem on the page — and even the big rows are one layer of the reading, not the whole reading.

A pair where it holds

A second pair, again only dates: her birth 8 February 2000 at 23:57, Singapore — Moon at 1.62 degrees Pisces, in Purva Bhadrapada, the 25th nakshatra, pada 4. His birth 5 April 1986 at 04:41, Ipoh — Moon at 29.56 degrees Capricorn, in Dhanishtha, the 23rd nakshatra, pada 2. Both sides read as lion. Same animal: 4 points out of 4.

The full sheet: Varna 0 of 1, Vashya 2 of 2, Tara 1.5 of 3, Yoni 4 of 4, Graha Maitri 3 of 5, Gana 0 of 6, Bhakoot 7 of 7, Nadi 8 of 8. Total 25.5 out of 36 — a good score, with a gana dosha flag still sitting on it. That last fact is the lesson. A full-marks yoni bought nothing in Gana, which stayed at zero, and did nothing for Varna. Each koota keeps its own ledger, and a clean line here does not launder a bad line elsewhere.

What a zero here does and does not mean

Say your sheet comes back with 0 of 4 on this row. Here is what it means: the two animals printed beside your birth stars are listed as enemies in the table, and four of the 36 points are gone. Here is what does not follow from it, and I will put it in the same breath because it must travel together: a yoni zero is not a diagnosis of anyone's desire, not a prediction of a cold bedroom, not proof the match will fail, and no honest reader of these tables will tell you it settles the question of whether you marry. Four points out of 36 cannot carry a verdict that heavy. What it suggests, in the classical reading, is that instinctive physical rhythm may need more deliberate attention — the way two people on different sleep schedules learn to share a flat. Work, yes. Sentence, no.

Where astrologers disagree

The schools are not one school. South Indian porutham traditions keep a yoni porutham of their own and weight it differently; some set it aside entirely in favour of mahendra and stree deergha checks. The bigger public disputes sit elsewhere on the sheet: the recognised exceptions that cancel Bhakoot dosha, the conditions that dissolve Nadi dosha, and the Tara tables where some lineages score Janma tara as a flat zero while others award half points. Two competent astrologers can run the same births and disagree on two rows. In my experience, a low yoni beside a strong Graha Maitri and a clean Nadi rarely turns out to be the thing a couple actually struggles with — but that is one practitioner's ledger, not law.

Running your own

You can check your own pair at https://spacemirror.ru/en/match.html — two sets of birth details in, all eight kootas, the total out of 36 and any doshas out. Two cautions before you treat any number as final. First, the whole method rests on the Moon alone: two people can score 32 and still be unsuited on everything the Moon does not cover, and Mangal dosha, the 7th house and both partners' dasha periods sit outside Guna Milan entirely. Second, a birth time wrong by two hours can push the Moon into the next nakshatra and change the animal itself. Check the time on the birth certificate before you let four points decide anything.
