Jupiter's transit to your natal chart

Someone probably told you Jupiter is "activating" something in your chart, or an app flagged a lucky window opening. What is actually happening is narrower and more useful than that: a planet is moving through the sky and, on certain dates, it reaches a precise angle to a point that was fixed the moment you were born. That angle is the transit. Everything else is interpretation layered on top of a position.

where it is right now

As of 19 September 2026, Jupiter sits at Leo 17°21', moving direct. It is not retrograde on this date - it is moving forward through the sign, and that direction matters for reading everything that follows.

how fast it moves, and why that decides everything

Jupiter's daily motion right now is about 0.1941 degrees a day. Over the coming year it covers roughly 24.38 degrees of the zodiac - just over three-quarters of the distance around a full sign. A complete circuit of the zodiac takes Jupiter about 11.86 years, and it spends close to 0.99 years, essentially a full year, in each sign.

That pace is the whole reason Jupiter transits and, say, Moon transits get talked about so differently. The Moon crosses a point in your chart and is gone within hours. Jupiter takes weeks to approach a point, sits close to it for a stretch, and takes weeks to leave. A fast body gives you a contact measured in days; a slow one gives you a contact measured in months. Neither is more or less real - they are just different units of time.

what an orb really tells you

For Jupiter's major aspects - conjunction, square, trine, opposition - the orb used here is 2.0 degrees. For the minor aspects it tightens further, to 1.0 degree. That is deliberately narrow next to the 8 or 10 degree orbs used for natal chart reading, and the reason is straightforward: an orb here is not a dial for how strong the contact feels, it is a conversion into time. At roughly 0.1941 degrees of daily motion, a 2.0 degree orb tells you approximately how many days the planet spends close enough to that point to count as "in aspect" at all. Widen the orb and you are not describing a stronger contact, you are just describing a longer one.

when it goes backwards

Jupiter does station in the coming year. It turns retrograde on 13 December 2026, at Leo 27°01'. It turns direct again on 13 April 2027, at Leo 17°00'. Between those two dates it is moving backward through the sign it just crossed, which means any point it aspected on the way forward gets a second, and sometimes a third, pass on the way back.

Jupiter also changes sign in this window: it moves from Leo into Virgo on 26 July 2027, while direct.

a worked example

Take a chart calculated for 3 May 1982, 10:53, Kuala Lumpur - an anonymous date, not a person. At current age 44.4, this chart has natal Saturn at Libra 17°09'. Transiting Jupiter at Leo 17°21' forms a sextile to that Saturn, harmonious in quality, with an orb of only 0.1939 degrees - about as exact as a transit gets.

This is where the retrograde loop shows its use. The contact goes exact three times: first on 18 September 2026, while Jupiter is direct. It comes back to exact on 3 April 2027, this time while retrograde, as Jupiter backs over the same degree of Leo. It goes exact a third time on 23 April 2027, direct again, on its way out. As of the reference date, the first pass has already happened, so this contact is currently separating rather than building - but the retrograde motion means the same degree gets touched twice more before Jupiter finally leaves it behind. One aspect, three exact dates, because the planet doubles back on itself.

what this does not tell you

None of this says what the sextile means for that person's week, their decisions, or their mood on 3 April 2027. The ephemeris gives you positions and dates - when a contact is exact, how long it lasts, how many times it repeats. What anyone does with that window is outside what a chart can measure.
