Transiting Neptune and Your Natal Chart

You have probably heard Neptune described as fog, dissolution, the planet that blurs whatever it touches. What is actually happening is narrower and more measurable: a body currently moving through Aries is forming a specific angle to a fixed point in your chart, and that angle has a date attached to it.

where it is right now

As of 19 September 2026, Neptune sits at Aries 3°12', moving retrograde. It has been backing through the early degrees of the sign rather than pushing forward, which matters for how many times it will cross any point you're tracking - more on that below.

how fast it moves, and why that decides everything

Neptune covers about 0.0275 degrees a day. Over the coming year it will move roughly 2.31 degrees - barely past where it stands right now. A full circuit of the zodiac takes 164.8 years, and it spends about 13.73 years in each sign.

Compare that to the Moon, which changes sign every couple of days, or Mars, which changes sign every six weeks or so. A fast body makes contact and moves on within days. Neptune makes contact and stays there, sometimes for the better part of a year once you count the retrograde loop. That single difference in speed is the whole reason a Mercury transit and a Neptune transit get talked about so differently - one is a knock at the door, the other is a long conversation with someone who isn't in a hurry to leave.

what an orb really tells you

The orb used for Neptune's major aspects here is 1.5 degrees. That number is not a measure of how strong the contact feels - it is a conversion of degrees into days. At roughly 0.0275 degrees of daily motion, 1.5 degrees of orb is the arithmetic behind how long a contact stays live. A tight orb on a slow planet still adds up to a long window, because the planet is moving so little each day. Minor aspects use a tighter figure still, 0.8 degrees, for the same reason - less angular room, less time inside it.

when it goes backwards

Neptune does station, and there are two turns in the coming year. It turns direct on 12 December 2026 at Aries 1°37', then turns retrograde again on 9 July 2027 at Aries 6°40'. Around each of those dates its daily motion slows toward zero before reversing, which is what lets it cross the same degree of your chart more than once. It does not change sign in this window - it spends the whole stretch in Aries.

a worked example

Here is a chart calculated for a birth on 26 May 1971, 02:15, in Ipoh - anonymous, used only to show the arithmetic. In that chart, the natal Sun sits at Gemini 3°53'. Transiting Neptune at Aries 3°12' forms a sextile to that Sun, with an orb of 0.6921 degrees against a limit of 1.5 - well inside range. The contact is separating, not applying: it has already passed exact and is now pulling away.

That doesn't mean it's over. Because Neptune stationed and reversed during this stretch, the sextile becomes exact five separate times: 23 May 2026 (direct), 22 August 2026 (retrograde), 19 March 2027 (direct), 4 December 2027 (retrograde), and 26 December 2027 (direct again). Five crossings of the same degree, spread across roughly a year and a half, all from one slow planet doubling back on itself. That is the retrograde loop in practice - not a single hit but a return visit, sometimes three of them.

what this does not tell you

The ephemeris gives you positions and dates - it does not tell you what a sextile between transiting Neptune and a natal Sun will produce in a particular life. That part is not in the numbers, and no chart, however precisely calculated, fills it in for you.
