transiting Pluto and your natal chart
Someone has probably told you Pluto is "hitting" something in your chart, delivered in the tone reserved for bad news. What is actually happening is narrower and far less dramatic: a slow outer planet is passing over a specific degree, and at some point that degree lines up with a point in your birth chart. That is the whole event. Everything else is interpretation added on top.
where it is right now
As of 19 September 2026, Pluto sits at Aquarius 3°14', moving retrograde. It has been in Aquarius for a while now and it is not going anywhere fast - more on that below. If you are reading this later, the degree will have shifted, so check the date against today's before you compare it to your own chart.
how fast it moves, and why that decides everything
Pluto's current daily motion is about 0.012 degrees a day. A full circuit of the zodiac takes roughly 248 years, and it spends around 20.67 years in each sign. Over the coming year it will cover only about 1.7 degrees of ecliptic longitude, moving forward and doubling back as it goes.
This is the number that explains why people talk about Pluto so differently from, say, the Moon or Mercury. A fast-moving body sweeps past a point and is gone within days, so its contacts are brief and frequent. Pluto crawls. A single conjunction or square can occupy the same handful of degrees for well over a year once you count the retrograde loop, which is why a Pluto transit reads as a condition rather than an event - not because it is more powerful, but because it does not leave.
what an orb really tells you
For a transit like this, the orb used for major aspects - conjunction, square, opposition, trine - is 1.5 degrees. Minor aspects get a tighter 0.8 degrees. Compare that to the 8- or 10-degree orbs used for natal chart aspects and you will see the point: a transit orb is not measuring how strong the contact is, it is measuring how long it lasts. At roughly 0.012 degrees a day, an orb of 1.5 degrees works out to a contact that can span well over a year of calendar time once Pluto's retrograde motion is factored in. Wide orb, long story - not a bigger event.
when it goes backwards
Pluto does station in the coming year, and the dates are specific. It turns direct on 16 October 2026 at Aquarius 3°04'. It turns retrograde again on 8 May 2027 at Aquarius 7°11'. It turns direct once more on 18 October 2027 at Aquarius 4°45'. Each station is a period of days where Pluto's apparent motion slows to almost nothing before reversing - the planet does not stop dead on a single date, it decelerates into the turn and accelerates back out of it.
What this does to a transit is straightforward: instead of crossing a degree once, Pluto can cross the same degree two or three times as it goes forward, turns back, and comes forward again. Pluto does not change sign in the coming year - it stays in Aquarius throughout - so every one of these stations and passes happens inside the same handful of degrees.
a worked example
Here is a chart calculated for a birth on 6 January 1981 at 02:31 in Ipoh, now 45.7 years old. Pluto, retrograde, at Aquarius 3°14', is in conjunction with this chart's natal Mars at Aquarius 4°35'. The orb is 1.34 degrees, inside the 1.5-degree limit for a major aspect. The contact is currently separating rather than applying - meaning Pluto has already passed the tightest part of this pass.
But because Pluto is looping back and forth near this degree, the conjunction is not a single date. The ephemeris gives two exact hits: 14 July 2026, with Pluto retrograde, and 8 January 2027, with Pluto direct. Between those two dates the aspect eases off and tightens again, the same degree crossed twice from two different directions. That double pass is the part a one-line horoscope never mentions, and it is the part the ephemeris actually hands you.
what this does not tell you
This gives you timing: where the planet is, how fast it is moving, when it reaches the exact degree, and how many times it does so. It does not tell you what any of that means for a specific life, and it does not owe you an outcome. What a person does during a transit window is not written in the ephemeris, and no honest reading of one will claim otherwise.
